Being most popular gaming system, the Xbox 360 is fun to play but when it goes on the fritz and the Xbox keeps freezing it can be very frustrating especially after you fork over $200 to $400 it. The most common error with it is the over heating issue it has. Microsoft has even announced a recall to fix this very problem but millions are out of luck because their warranty is up.
Why does your system overheat you ask? Well it revolves around the design of the heat sinks on the chips on the main board. Also another flaw in the design is the slim design of the system. Airflow is limited because of this and can cause the overheating too.
Now we asked the question, how do I fix this? Well there is two easy ways to prevent overheating in the first place. If you already have experience the common errors with overheating which include 2 red rings, 3 red rings, freezing, and e73 or e74 error you need to fix it.
The first two things you can do to prevent the overheating is to first keeping the Xbox away from other things so it has enough room to promote proper venting. The second thing is to open up the system and clean out any dust you have in it. Dust can cause a weak airflow inside the system and will cause it to get hotter.
If you already have the problems and the Xbox 360 keeps freezing and any error codes like previously said than you need to do a more little more work to fix it. The main reason why it freezes is that connection points on the GPU, graphics processing unit. They have a weak connection to the main board because of the overheating that happened over the months or years of use. There are 4 ways to solve this problem.
1. The easiest and defiantly the most expensive way is to simply buy a new console to take advantage of the better design of the heat sinks and chips in the newer systems.
2. Send it to Microsoft to repair it themselves. This can only work if you are still under the warranty and have 4 to 8 weeks of time to wait. Also remember to keep your hard drive before you send it out.
3. Have a repair service fix it for you. Many big cities have companies that will do it for you for a fee from $60 to $120. Great option if don’t want to wait and are out of the warranty.
4. The last option is to fix it yourself. I personally did it myself when I got the 3 red rings. I was out of the warranty and considered myself a semi savvy with electronics. It was pretty easy and I had the system running the same night. I just followed a guide and picked a few parts up from my local hardware store and that was it. This is a nice option for anybody that wants it done quick and cheap.
