Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death – Steps You Can Take to Prevent it From Happening to You

Did you know that approximately one third of all Xbox 360 consoles have had reliability issues? Most of these problems have to do with the consoles getting excessively hot. When this happens, you get the three red light error which is also known as the red ring of death. As long as those blinking red lights continue, you may as well forget about any gaming until your unit has had time to cool off.

There is another problem called the E-74 error which for the most part is the same thing as the three red light error because it is also caused by excessive heat. Whatever is done to prevent one will also prevent the other.

So what exactly can be done to reduce your chances of getting the red ring of death? This article will cover three aspects of this. They have to do with how you use your Xbox, where you use it, and general upkeep.

How to use it.

The console tends to overheat because the CPU and the GPU chips run very hot. The cooling heat sinks and fans within the unit can’t keep pace with this heat generation. In addition to this, the cramped internal space also make cooling difficult. Therefore, playing graphics intensive games non-stop for several hours will most likely over heat your unit. So give it a rest after playing for an hour or two.

Where to use it.

If you want to keep your console cool, it only makes sense to use it in a cool environment. If it’s summer, then keep the air conditioning running. Beware of heat sources such as heaters, radiators, stoves, and direct sunlight. You also want to make sure that your Xbox is in an area with plenty of ventilation. Something else to consider is the effect of dust. A dusty environment means that dust can build up inside the console. Dust is a very good insulator which means that it will trap heat inside of your Xbox. Dust also interferes with proper airflow within the unit.

Upkeep or maintenance.

Keep your console clean of dust and grit. Dust has a way getting into the internal electronics where it can do harm. Use a vacuum to keep the cooling vents dust free. A dusty game disc can also introduce dust into your machine. So keep them clean by storing your discs in their cases.

Sometimes the three red light error can happen no matter what you do. But it only makes sense to do everything you can to try to prevent this problem in the first place.
